Four-Forty is a South African instrumental jazz group from Daveyton in the East Rand, known for their blend of township jazz and contemporary rhythm. Formed in the mid-1990s, the trio of Vuyisile “Vee” Sabongo (saxophones), Mvuso Dimba (piano, sax, percussion), and Steven Mabona (bass) became a standout act in Gauteng’s jazz community, later joined by Jerry Dibakoane and Siphiwe “Speech” Khoza.
Their 2000 debut "Messages," under Sony Music, introduced a warm, rhythm-driven sound through tracks like “Song for My Mother” and “Smooth Survivor.” The follow-up, "Us+Them=1" (2006, Sheer Sound), earned a South African Music Award nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Album in 2007. Songs like “Ode to Sarah Baartman” and “Tshisa” reflected cultural pride and lyrical emotions.
Known for their expressive performances and mentorship in the East Rand, Four-Forty remain influential figures in South African jazz, their music still celebrated today.
